Hybrid/Combined Treatment

These procedures combine both open cerebrovascular neurosurgery and minimally invasive (endovascular) techniques to treat complex problems of blood vessels of the brain and spine. These may be needed in vascular problems that are too difficult to treat with one technique alone.

    • Complex brain aneurysms

    • Arteriovenous malformations

    • Dural arteriovenous fistulae

    • Carotid and intracranial atherosclerotic disease

    • A general anaesthetic

    • Use of a special “hybrid operating theatre”

    • A combination of open surgery through an opening in the skull and use of x-ray-guided tube (catheter) techniques through the groin or wrist

    • Vascular imaging is used to confirm successful treatment or to guide further interventions

    • Multiple procedures may be required to achieve cure

This technique provides tailored treatment to the problem and can increase the chance of a long-term cure or control.

Risks associated with these techniques are similar to open cerebrovascular and endovascular treatments.

    • A hospital stay in either a specialised ward or intensive care unit

    • The hospital stay duration and recovery depends on the treatments involved

    • There will be a need often for further follow-up scans to monitor treatment response
